Good Morning, America!

Some of you may already be familiar with my old friend and soul-brother, my alter-ego, so to speak, Baba Pagal Nath Charsi, whose fiery political speech in the crude, street Hindi of barbarous Delhi was podcast on this blog many months ago, and saw record downloads.

Well, here is the good Baba again, this time in a more urbane avatar, in English, with a long song, a lyrical essay that is hilarious, risqué, and political dynamite. The F-word is sprinkled through it like confetti, so Eminem fans will love this long song.

The background to this composition must also be told. This was written in 2004, when the Baba was on the run from the Karnataka State Police, their goon squads, and their hired assassins who disapproved of his peaceful political activism: spreading the Gospel of Freedom.

Afraid for his life, and wanting to send out his final message to his faithful followers, he holed up in a small hotel in a remote mountain village and hammered in out on his laptop. He then jeeped it to a nearby small town, into a cyber café there, and e-mailed it to the faithful few. It is from these records, carefully preserved, that this long song has now been unearthed and is being aired. The Antidote Blog is proud to host Baba Pagal Nath once more: “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.”

Good Morning, America is an “immigrant song”: it challenges the visa-passport regime. But it challenges many other forms of tyranny, including, of course, that great tyranny against the Noble Herb.

Revolution Calling!

I recall a colleague in the Economic Times once telling me, “You are a good journalist.” Instead of thanking him for the compliment, I replied, “I am not a journalist. I am a revolutionary.” I don’t write for fun. There is a serious purpose to all this – the overthrow of the regime.

The first “Antidote” column published in ET in 1998 was titled “Revolution Calling!”

I remain singing the same song.

On that happy note, today, I have a podcast for you. In Hindi – the crude Hindi of the streets of Delhi, where I grew up. I recorded it ages ago but never broadcast it, thinking it too obscene. But it just so happened that I heard it again last evening, and found it hilarious, and serious as well. Pretty neat, in fact.

You can play the podcast by clicking here.

I just hope you enjoy it. Happy Diwali.

And as for those who might take grave offence at the language – imagine an Eminem in Hindustani – I have these words from Alice Cooper:

No more Mr. Nice Guy,
No more Mr. Clean,
No more, Mr. Nice Guy,
They say, he’s sick,
He’s obscene.

Push the tempo!

Podcast: Unilateral Free Trade Part 2

In the first podcast on Unilateral Free Trade we discussed the fact that the purpose of life is consumption, that pro-producer policies are anti-national because they cause injury to all consumers. We discussed Jean Baptiste Say's Law of Markets which says that all non-competitors stand to gain if anything is sold; and we also discussed the fallacies in the "doctrine of reciprocity," by which governments, politicians and diplomats interfere in international trade – only to wreck it, as with Kamal Nutt.

Yet, there were readers who were unconvinced. And their basic fear is that unilateral free trade means a "law of the jungle" in which only the fittest will survive. It is this misconception that I will address in this podcast, entitled "Unilateral Free Trade Part 2."

Hope you enjoy it.

Podcast: Property Is Liberty

In my last podcast we spoke of John Locke, who wrote in the year 1690 that "where there is no Property there is no Justice."

In this podcast we take the discussion one step further, to the proposition that:

Where There Is No Property There Is No Liberty.

Natural Order: Podcast

This is the link to my third podcast, on the first principle of liberal and libertarianism - the notion that when all men are guided by legitimate self-interest, there comes about a naturally harmonious social order.

Frederic Bastiat wrote Economic Harmonies based on this understanding.

And Thomas Paine's Common Sense was also guided by this fundamental belief.

Enjoy the podcast and share it with your friends.

Manmohan's Vision... And Mine

I have another podcast for my readers today – one that is focused on prime minister Manmohan Singh's Independence Day address to the nation.

The full text of the speech can be obtained here.

The podcast can be heard or downloaded here.

The crux of the talk is this: There is a "conflict of visions" between India's socialists and India's libertarians.

They have a village vision.

We have an urban vision.

They see The State as a generator of employment.

We see The Market as a generator of wealth.

They do not see that the most important role of The State lies in the administration of Justice.

Do enjoy the podcast.
